I kept a journal of all the advertising I saw in one day, and the results socked me. Even though we talked in class about how much we see, I never really realized how much is out there. Whether it be driving in my car, going to get lunch with a friend, or simply watching TV after a long day at school, I was exposed to advertising while doing almost everything.
The day started off with my radio alarm clock trying to sell me tires for my car. They were good year tires. I realized that the time that I woke up in the morning was the morning commute, and this is the time that radios have the most advertising because people are in their cars. I do have a car, and will need tires down the road, but this did not apply to my life right now.
The next time I was exposed to an ad was not long after getting out of bed. When I was driving to school I saw countless bill boards. I cannot even remember all of them. I saw one for teeth whitening, one for adding a deck to your house, two for water parks, and one for a law firm. Most of these things I would never buy, but they must have the money to put up the bill boards, so the companies do get people to buy their products. Teeth whitening has a wide range of people that the product could be targeting. Any where from young adults, to middle aged people. Adding a deck on the house, is only for people who own a home, and have the money to do that during the recession. Water parks have the widest range of targets. Water parks attract young kids, their parents, teens, and day camps in the summer. Having a big sign with splashing water while driving in the heat is a great way to get people to think about taking a day trip.
After I got to school I saw advertising for our school in general. There are hand outs in the SUB that give people reasons to come to Kutztown. Since I am already a student here, I am already bought, but the incoming Freshman can get sold by these hand outs. Other ads in the SUB were the posters for the bank on campus, PSECU. The posters said to switch banks, and get no surcharge at an ATM on Kutztown's campus. I already have an account with them, so again their ads must be working.
After school I went home and watched some TV. I was watching re-runs of What I Like About You, on the family channel. The ads on this channel were for sneakers, Wal-Mart, JCPenny, go-gurts, and much more. The reason why these things are advertised on this channel is because children watch this channel, and so do families at large. ABC knows that children need sneakers, and that the mothers of the viewers want to save money with Wal-Mart. This is a very good idea, and the ads target the viewers of the station.
I am sure that these are not the only ads I saw during the day, but they were the most noticeable. This really was an eye opener as to how many ads Americans are exposed to everyday. This influences what we eat, wear, where we spend a mini vacation, and where we go to college. All of this was learned from one day of observation.

Advancement in Shopping Online
I found this article that I found to be very interesting. Never before have I visited a shopping site that allows me to put an outfit on a model and see how it looks before I buy it. Reading this article reminds me of what we talked about when a new media arises, other older medias adapt. My question is will other sites follow this idea, and how long will it be before every shopping site has this technology?

Media Filled Day
I kept a journal of how many times I use the media in ONE day. This one day has opened my eyes to a realization of how important media is in my life as well as how natural it is to use it. My day started off at 8:30 am on Thursday morning. My radio clock went off letting me know it was time to start my day. The song was "tick tock" and this song made it a little easier to get out of bed that morning. After I got ready for school I went on my computer. I always do this in the morning to check the weather. This was around 9:15 and I realized that Thursday was going to be a great sunny day, but cold. I got my coat because it was suppose to be 26 degrees. On the way to my first class I heard the radio on from the workers working on the new Berks Hall. It was a song that I never heard but I know that when I am working it goes a lot fast when there is music.
After being exposed to three different media's I finally got to my Shakespeare class. We started the class by reading some of Hamlet. This made me a little bored because I really do not like Shakespeare. After we read a little my teacher showed us a show that is popular in Canada called Slings and Arrows. It is a show that is based on Shakespeare. I liked this show a lot it was funny and made me realize that there are a lot of shows that I never even knew existed.
After class I went to the SUB at 11 for lunch. As soon as I walked in I saw three TVs that all had different news shows. I did not stop to look at them because I was so hungry. I went to one more class, before my last class of the day. In my last class of the day at 1:30 read Garlic and Sapphires. It is a book about an under cover food critic. This book makes me hungry when I read it because the details about the food are vivid.
After class I went to my room to pack up my things to go home for the weekend. I left around 3:30 to be in the car for an hour listening to a CD I just made filled with all my favorite songs, for today that is. The whole way home was good because music lets me clear my head of all the things in my life. I got home around 4:30 and unpacked then went right to the TV to watch Hannah Montana with my cousin that I was watching that night while both our parents went to the hospital to visit my grandma. I love Hannah Montana just as much as my little cousin. This made me realize that there is a broad range of people that like this show of all different age groups. After we watched Hannah it was coming time to make dinner. As I was cooking dinner for my cousin around 5:15 I was listening to the end of Wizards of Wavery Place. This is another show that I enjoy. After dinner we had to go pick up my brother from hockey practice. It was around 7:30 and my cousin was getting tired until she got into the car and started to blast the Hannah Montana CD. We listened to the CD the whole way there and the whole way back. It was around 9 when we got home. I put my cousin to bed because it was time for me to have a little down time. I read a little more of Garlic and Sapphires which again made me hungry. I went to bed instead of eating. After I looked at my journal I realized how much I use media. Media is a very important thing in my life.
